BTEC Diploma in Horse Care Level 2

Course description

You will study a mixture of theory at college and practical work at the stables, including riding on the flat and jumping, and learning about general horse care.

This course takes place at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre, Glossop.

How will I spend my time on the course?
You will gain lots of experience working and dealing with horses. Subjects covered include:
 work-related experience,
 feeding and watering horses,
 routine stable duties,
 horse handling,
 horse grooming,
 trimming and plaiting,
 principles of horse behaviour,
 riding horses on the flat, and
 Functional Skills.

What are the entry requirements?
 Minimum of four GCSEs grade D or above, including English language,
 New Diploma at level 1 overall merit grade, including Functional Skills English, maths and IT at level 1.

You should also have attended a satisfactory interview and have some experience with horses.

As this is a physically demanding course you must be prepared for a physical fitness test.

Will it cost anything to do this course?
If you’re a full time students under the age of 19 you will not usually need to pay any course or examination fees, if you’re studying and taking your first diploma.

There may be some excursions, which may cost £5 to £15. You will need to supply their own riding kit, grooming kit and uniform and stationery. Help may be available for students with financial difficulties, contact financial support services on 0500 162100.

What other help can I get from the college?
Our student support services staff can offer advice and guidance on financial matters and accommodation . Counsellors are available to help with personal and emotional problems. How will I learn on this course?
The horse yard boasts very good facilities and a wide variety of horses to ride and work with, including an outdoor arena, indoor school and cross-country course.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed with assignments and practical assessments.

Will there be a work placement?
The course involves a work placement at Hargate Hill Equestrian Centre in Glossop.

What can I do after this course?
BTEC Extended Diploma in Horse Management level 3.

You could go on to work at riding schools, stables, saddleries or feed merchants.
